The Lithuanian Sea Museum is one of the most visited and unique museums in Lithuania, located in a unique location—Smiltynė, on the Curonian Spit. The museum invites visitors to explore the sea through science, history, wildlife, and engaging experiences.
The museum's activities include not only exhibitions but also education, culture, animal care, scientific research, and raising public awareness of maritime issues. We strive to ensure that every visitor not only sees but also understands the importance of the marine world.
Our mission
We build the maritime identity of individuals and the nation through active dialogue, broadening understanding of the sea.
The Lithuanian Sea Museum complex consists of:
- The Aquarium and museum exhibits – located in the historic Nerija Fort, the aquarium invites visitors on a journey from Lithuanian streams and lakes through the Baltic and North Seas to tropical waters. Twenty-five aquariums are home to about 180 species of marine cold-water, coral reef, freshwater fish, and invertebrates. Here you will also find marine mammals and birds, as well as exhibits on marine nature. In the ammunition storage facilities beneath the embankments—the tunnels and caponiers—there are maritime history exhibits that tell the story of the Lithuanian fleet, the greatest shipwrecks, the legacy of the sailing era in Klaipėda, and Lithuania’s maritime history.
- The Dolphinarium is a venue for educational shows featuring dolphins and California sea lions
- The ship-museum M52 “Sūduvis” is an authentic warship that offers a close-up look at the history of the Lithuanian Navy
- The Ethnographic Seaside Fisherman’s Homestead – an exhibition offering the opportunity to experience the reconstructed traditional seaside way of life and fishing culture.
- The Old Fishing Boats Yard – an open exhibition space showcasing the museum’s largest exhibits – authentic fishing boats that offer a close-up look at the history of Lithuanian fishing and the daily lives of sailors.
- The Baltic Sea Animal Rehabilitation Center (BJGRC) is a modern facility where seals and birds affected by human economic activities are cared for and treated, and after completing treatment, are released back into the wild. The center runs a marine animal research and rescue program, as well as public awareness and education initiatives.
- The Dolphin Therapy Center is a unique branch of the Lithuanian Maritime Museum that offers comprehensive therapeutic programs utilizing dolphins and a multidisciplinary team of specialists. In 2024, the Dolphin Therapy Center became a licensed complementary and alternative healthcare dolphin therapy center, staffed by licensed PA healthcare professionals.
Let's explore the sea together
The Lithuanian Sea Museum is more than just a museum. It is a vibrant learning center where every visit becomes a journey into the world of the sea.
